The really disturbing reason Republicans oppose gun control

You do not have to engage most Republicans in a conversation very long before the real reason for their opposition to gun control becomes obvious.  Your conversation with a Republican about gun control may begin with him offering the old bromide that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.”  He will offer spirited support for the 2nd Amendment “ as a sacred American right. Keep on pressing him to explain his position.  Say, “I’m not arguing with the right of Americans to own guns for personal self-defense or for hunting or sport.  But, why would any of those uses require a person to own an assault rifle or high capacity clip or armor-piercing bullets?”  Listen carefully to how your Republican friend answers this question.  His response will peal back all of the high-sounding philosophy to reveal his true reason for being a gun advocate.

Ultimately, your friend will justify gun ownership as the last best hope of a free people to defend themselves against tyranny. You will discover that the real reason your Republican friend supports gun ownership, including ownership of the most dangerous weapons like assault rifles, is that he is terrified of government, particularly the federal government.  He doesn’t want to own an assault rifle to defend himself from some robber or deranged person with a weapon.  He doesn’t want or need an assault rifle for hunting or sport.  Your Republican friend wants to own an assault rifle to defend himself against the police and military.  Deep down, your Republican friend has become so alienated from all government, the federal government in particular, that he believes his only option and that of like-minded patriots is armed rebellion. Your Republican friend believes that the federal government in particular will soon be taken over by socialists, communists, facists or some other foreign ‘ism’ and maybe already has been.  Your Republican opposes gun control because he is preparing for a civil war.  He is stockpiling weapons for the fight.

A substantial number of Americans, mostly Republicans, are paranoid when it comes to their own government and are actually engaged in preparation for civil war.  I don’t know about you but I find that idea very disturbing.

How Santa does it.

At this time of the year, you are probably getting questions from your children concerning how Santa Claus can actually deliver all those Christmas presents in just one night.  Here is the answer.
Santa accomplishes his magic by taking advantage of “wormholes,” which are essentially shortcuts through spacetime.  Specifically, Santa makes use of what are called “Traversable Wormholes.”   Traversable wormholes make almost instantaneous travel from one part of the earth (or even universe) to another possible.  In other words, Santa can move from one part of the world to another in a nanosecond or much less, simply by utilizing the most convenient wormhole.

Santa reaps an additional advantage from using traversable wormholes because they make time travel possible.  In short, Santa can not only move around the world with enormous speed and efficiency but he can also take as long as he needs to accomplish the task.  He just employs the time travel aspects of traversable wormholes to always arrive at everyone’s house at mid-night.
I hope this explanantion helps.

NRA—Uncaring, Heartless Cowards

A National Disgrace

The National Rifle Association has nothing to say about the Newtown, CT tragedy—nothing.   I understand that the NRA cannot offer any rational defense for its opposition to regulating weapons of mass destruction like those used at Newtown.  But, the NRA can’t even bring itself to the level of expressing regret that the Newtown tragedy happened.   It can’t even rise to the level of offering condolences to the families of the victims.  The behavior of the NRA is disgusting.

If you are a member of the NRA, you should be ashamed.  You belong to an organization with no heart.

A message to the NRA and other gun lovers—Enough already.

The Connecticut mass murderer who took the lives of 20 young children and 7 adults was able to kill so many because he used rapid-fire weapons.  Reportedly these consisted of two handguns, a Sig Sauer and a Glock.  These weapons are easy to carry and conceal and are capable of firing up to five bullets per second.  No one in this murderer’s field of view had a chance to run or find cover.

These weapons have been used before by deranged individuals to kill and injure innocent men, women and children.  And yet, members of the NRA and other so-called defenders of the 2nd Amendment argue that to ban such weapons would be a violation of their Constitutional rights.  That’s bullshit.

No one in this country needs to own a functioning, Glock, Sig Sauer and other such weapon.  You can’t hunt with them.  Shooting animals with such weapons wouldn’t be hunting, it would be just spraying bullets hoping something might hit passing game.  If you want to use them for target practice, there is no reason why you couldn’t rent them whenever you engage in the sport so that we could tightly control their use.  Think of it like renting bowling shoes or a bowling ball.  No one needs a weapon that fires five bullets a second for self-defense.  How many times to do you need to shoot a burglar or attacker to get him to stop?  And, all of you “Patriots” out there who are stocking these weapons so that someday soon you can rebel and overthrow the U.S. Government, I have news for you.  The feds have tanks and bigger guns.

Give me a break.  I don’t want to take your precious guns away from you.  But, you are endangering my life and the lives of every American.  Of course, you maintain that you are a responsible individual.  You would never use your Glock to harm anyone that wasn’t trying to harm you.  Maybe so.  But, there is a good chance you may lose control of that weapon at some point.  It could end up in the hands of some deranged person who will use it to kill children.   Are you willing to take that risk?

Look, all the rest of us want is a chance.  Own as many guns as you want but you don’t need to own guns that fire five bullets or more per second.  Wouldn’t ONE bullet a second be enough?  Why not make it sporting?  Would it be so bad if you had to cock the damn thing each time before you fired off a round?  Maybe then, the next time your fellow Americans who have done you no harm who are shopping at a mall or going to school or attending a political rally or doing a hundred other day-to-day things would have a chance to run away, find a hiding place or disarm the murderer before he can do so much damage.

Keep your 2nd Amendment rights but can’t you at least give us a chance—a minute or two to get away?  Is that too much to ask?

If you hate the deficit, you should LOVE the fiscal cliff

If you are really concerned about the deficit, you should NOT WANT Republicans and Democrats to reach an agreement to prevent the “fiscal cliff.”   In fact, you should be writing Congress demanding that your representatives DO NOTHING to prevent the country from going off the fiscal cliff.  Yes, NOTHING, INACTION, THE FAILURE TO REACH AGREEMENT, TOTALLY GRIDLOCK is just what is needed to solve the deficit problem.
Look at this chart prepared by the Congressional Budget Office.  The dotted line shows what will happen if the Bush tax cuts are extended for everyone and the scheduled cuts in domestic and defense spending aren’t allowed to happen.  The solid like shows what will happen if we plunge over the fiscal cliff big time—the Bush tax cuts expire for everyone and all of the automatic cuts in defense and non-defense spending kick in as scheduled.  The debit to GDP ratio goes from 73% this year to a very sustainable 61% in 2022 to an exceedingly healthy 53% in 2037.  The debit problem is TOTALLY SOLVED.

Of course, if we go off the fiscal cliff your taxes will go up, we will have a second recession, the unemployment rate will return to 9% or higher, our borders will be less safe because we will have fewer border guards, our food and drug supplies will be less safe because we will have fewer inspectors, there will be less money for schools, road and bridge repair, and so on.  However, we won’t have to worry about the national debit.
