The Republican Ground Zero Mosque Nonsense

On Friday night, President Obama made a comment on the controversial proposal  to build a mosque and community center near ground zero in Manhattan.  Republicans immediately tried to turn Obama's comments into an issue they could use against Democrats in the fall campaign.  For example, Republican Senator David Vitter of Louisiana said, "President Obama's support of building the mosque at Ground Zero is a slap in the face to the American people."  So what exactly was it Obama said that was a "slap in the face to the American people"?  Here is what Obama said:

"As a citizen and as president, I believe that Muslims have the right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country. That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances."

Oh, my God!  The President of the United States supports freedom of religion.  What will this guy think of next?

What do the Repubs want, a religious test for zoning ordinances?  Let's see Christians can build anywhere they want but Jews can't build in the Christian zones.  And, Muslims, well Muslims can't build anywhere.  Is that the country we want?  I think not.
